Anglo-Saxon Gold Treasures Found

The term Anglo-Saxon is quite new. The Anglo-Saxons were the colonists of German origin from the areas of Angeln and Saxony, they reached Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire somewhere around 410 AD. The Anglo-Saxons ruled until the year 1066. The artisans of this tribe were adept in making wonderful object with gold, and enamel.

The archaeologists discovered a great collection of gold and silver artistic pieces is from the remains of the Anglo-Saxon tribe. One of the most mentionable things that have been found is the Historic Anglo-Saxon Military Gold and Silver Hoard. This hoard would definitely provide great insight into the culture of the Anglo-Saxon tribe. The archaeology experts suggest that these artifacts date back to the late 6th century.

Most of the treasures of the belonging to the Anglo-Saxon tribe were discovered from the land of England. Along with other artifacts, two Bronze Age axes, Roman clasps, four gold coins, and a number of Roman and Medieval silver coin were also found from this area. This discovery was a breakthrough into the culture of Anglo-Saxon tribe. Archaeologists have discovered Anglo-Saxon gold at many other places. These discovered treasures reveal various stories about the culture, and civilisation of the Anglo-Saxon tribe.

The great collection of gold that has been unearthed in Britain has a history that goes back 1300 years, a period of Anglo-Saxons. Theses are the most outstanding pieces of gold, belonging to the Anglo-Saxon tribe that has been discovered in Britain. Although very rare, but the gold pieces that were found were scattered in an area of 20 square metres. This area was ploughed last year.

The greatest of these treasures was Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, which was discovered some seventy years ago, theses treasures are now placed in the British museum. Sutton Hoo was a royal ship sepulture that has a face of early dark ages with a helmet. The helmet was designed in a way that it had projections of eyebrows, a nose, and a moustache; complete look of a face. People from all over the world come here to take a look at theses treasures.

Along with the 1.5-kilo gold of Sutton Hoo, the other five kilos of gold that has been discovered so far has 1300 pieces including 84 sword pommels, 3 Christian Crosses, and parts of several helmets. According to the historians, some of the ornaments discovered belonged too far off places like Sri Lanka.

Some of the new discoveries date back to the 7th century, which is around the same timeline as of Sutton Hoo Treasure, these treasures were found in the same area of the ship burial. The designs and artistry of the discovered treasures reveals that Britain was a sophisticated country with a great aesthetic sense even when it was divided into different kingdoms.

The British museum displays some of these artifacts of Anglo-Saxon tribes for the public. The British museum has ensured that the artifacts would not leave the country, although it is still undecided where they would be finally kept, but most probably, they would go to some local museum I the northeast. - 33380
