By Gregory Crocker

Over the centuries, mother of pearl has been used for numerous purposes to create countless effects. The number of options at your fingertips can get daunting -- mother of pearl is popularly used as a decorative inlay, architecture and of course for beautiful jewellery pieces. Use your imagination and you'll cook up any number of great ideas.

For starters, take a look at these suggestions.

Crafting Mother Of Pearl Jewellery For Yourself

There is no shortage to the number of ways you can use mother of pearl to infuse new life in an otherwise suffocated room. Mother of pearl's flexibility lends itself to any situation, any room, and any color scheme. Try making charm bracelets, earrings, watches, and necklaces all from mother of pearl and you'll see what I mean.

When you've decided on what you are going to make, consider what you plan on doing with your product once its finished. Use as much of your own personality as you can for a truly unique effect. The tried and true color scheme of mother of pearl is black and white, but like any other piece of jewellery there is much room for elaboration. You can dye your pearls to match an outfit you currently own by using any number of vinegar based commercial dyes. Be sure to use acid based dyes for the strongest coloring.

Mother of pearl is of course an authentic piece of nature, and as such its shape will not be perfect. This is part of its allure. Be sure to take the oddball pearls and use them in prominent places of your work. By doing this, you help contribute a unique look that is all yours.

Making House Decorations

Though a little trickier than making jewellery, it's certainly not impossible. Simply set aside more time for cutting your mother of pearl. It's not hard.

Using an average jeweller's saw, cut carefully into your mother of pearl until you create several unique pieces. Weave them together. Laminate your decoration to metal or ceramic tile and cover it all with lacquer for that extra glossy look. Polishing compounds and sandpaper will work well, especially on felt. Be careful with this step, though, as mother of pearl can easily crack and break.

One amusing thing to do with mother of pearl is to create decorative inlays. Try making an interesting pattern and using some epoxy glue to attach the pieces you've made to the neck of the guitar.

Jewellery boxes that have overstayed their welcome are also great subjects for a little epoxy glue and a few fancy looking decorations. It's the same process as we've examined already, and the results will look great.

There's no doubt about it, mother of pearl can really give a dull room a new lease on life. Try out each of these ideas to turn your garden variety house into a unique art gallery of your own pieces that will reward you for years and years. - 33380
